Dear Friend of the Farm
Join the Veggielution!
Dig our up-and-coming events. From a youth workshop aimed at 15-18 year-olds to a soulful music performance for all ages, we hope that one of our events will move you to join us down at the Farm.
Leaders of the Future Workshop
Inspired by urban gardener, Ron Finley, of South Central Los Angeles, who says that urban farmers can be cooler than any hipster, OZCF presents a three-day youth workshop in the July school holidays.

Scheduled for 8-10 July 2013, the cost, including lunch, snacks, materials, and transportation will be R300 per day, per participant, and attendance over all three days is recommended. Please consider supporting a young person who cannot afford to pay. If you are between 15-18 years of age, please join us for an experience that can help equip you with the skills required to become effective environmental thinkers and doers.
For registration and more information, e-mail Matthew at education@ozcf.co.za or call 076 618 9722.
Eliezer live in the barn at the Oranjezicht City Farm
Benefit performance for OZCF: Saturday 22 June 2013 at 7pm!
Eliezer is the solo music project of Cape Town musician Lance Herman. Nylon-string guitar and vocals – lyrical ballads, haunting waltzes – a soulful performance influenced by artists such as Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake, and Jose Gonzalez.
What the Critics Say: “I am not qualified to comment on the technical quality of the songs. I can only say that as a lover of music I am moved by them, and struck by the honesty of the lyrics. I have been to three Eliezer shows and each one has been more magical than the last.”
Soup/snacks available before the gig. R50.00 pre-booked tickets or R60.00 at the door. Proceeds towards the new earthworm farm. To book or for more information, e-mailevents@ozcf.co.za
OZCF Market Day

We also have plants for sale from Michells Wholesale Nursery; our own herbs and organic produce harvested at Welgevallen Food Garden including carrots, turnips, radish, swiss chard, beans, lettuce, rocket, coriander, mixed Chinese greens, chillies and more. As always, excellent coffee and teas, free newspapers to read at your leisure, delicious fresh-baked goods and home-made foods available to eat there or take away. Don’t let winter cold or rain dissuade you, as we will shift the market into the 18th century barn where some say the cozy feel is even better. Come any time from 9am to 2pm.
Contact cityfarm@ozcf.co.za if you want to be a market vendor and join us in experimentation, or if you are keen to volunteer to help set up, clean up, sell produce or help in any other way.
Design inspiration – benches by Liam Mooney
Thanks to those who have purchased a bench for the Farm in the name of a loved one or a muse. The benches are unique to the Farm, designed by noted Cape Town designer, Liam Mooney and built by Bloc Outdoor from wood of the Iroko tree (Chlorophora excelsa), native to the west coast of Africa.
The first bench (the prototype, a “Farm-With-A-View” bench) has been manufactured and installed on site and it looks gorgeous! The others are being manufactured and should be available for installation within two weeks. There are still a few benches available from the following styles:
The OZCF “Down On The Farm” Bench (no back): The standard benches for the Farm [donation amount: R5 000 one more available]
The OZCF “Resting Farmer” recliner bench: to go on the square ‘pergola’ area facing each other on either side of the lei water at the Sidmouth Road side of the Farm. [donation amount: R8 000; four available]
The OZCF “Farm-With-A-View” Bench (with back): [donation amount: R10 000; two available]

OZCF in the spotlight
OZCF continues to be featured in the media with two TV productions on DSTV Channel 144 Kyknet, Kwela and Dagbreek, featuring the Farm.
World Environment Day, Wednesday 5 June 2013
This year’s theme – Think.Eat.Save – encourages you to make informed decisions in purposefully selecting foods that have less of an environmental impact, such as organic foods that do not use chemicals in the production process. Choosing to buy locally can also mean that foods are not flown halfway across the world and therefore limit carbon emissions. So think before you eat and help protect our environment.
OZCF is celebrating World Environment Day digitally. Let’s see if we can help reduce food waste to landfill while helping improve the soil at the Farm: Buy your bucket and bokashi kit today!

We need to raise R25 000 for an earthworm farm designed and built by Full Cycle. Vermicompost and ‘worm tea’ improve plant growth and health. The system, that will be installed on Saturday 11 June (please join in), has a processing capacity of 200kgs a day, producing 400 litres of vermitea a week and 100kgs of vermicompost a month.
- Bursaries for 15-18 year old students to attend the Leaders of the Future Workshop in the July School holidays. R900 per student for three-day workshop.
With deep appreciation and thanks,
The Oranjezicht City Farm Team
