Bringing Nature into the Classroom
We are currently working to bring the experience of Oranjezicht City Farm into the classroom with our semester long Weekly Lesson programme. Each week, a trained educator from Oranjezicht City Farm comes into the classroom to give an hour long interactive lesson on topics such as organic farming, compost, and healthy eating. The program is enhanced by multiple outings to the farm throughout the semester, in order for students to see real life examples of what they learn about in the classroom.
Currently, the programme is being run as a pilot at Stepping Stones Montessori Pre-School. The Meerkat class (ages 6-9) is greatly enjoying their weekly visits from Colleen, our excellent OZCF head educator, and you can follow their progress in the OZCF Newsletter and on our Facebook page. The course started with instruction on compost, seeds, and farming and will culminate in the children growing vegetables in large wooden planters that they make themselves.
At the moment we are only in the early phases of developing the programme and securing funding, but if this programme is something that your school would be interested in keep an eye on this page, the newsletter, or the Facebook page. We will post updates when we are ready to expand.
